Country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus takes the stage at Coeur d’Alene Casino on Thursday, Oct. 12. Cyrus burst onto the country music scene in the ‘90s, making history with the debut of his studio album, Some Gave All, which quickly hit No. 1 on the Billboard album charts and held the position for 17 consecutive weeks; a record he still holds as a solo male artist. The album produced the iconic hit “Achy Breaky Heart,” a song that catapulted him to super stardom and even garnered its own signature line dance that became a worldwide craze. The album also produced the hits “Could’ve Been Me,” “Where’m Gonna Live When I Get Home,” and the title track “Some Gave All,” which earned him the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment. Cyrus has gone on to release 13 critically acclaimed albums, with his latest, Set the Record Straight, coming out on Nov. 10. Billy Ray Cyrus is also known for his starring role in the hit Disney show Hannah Montana, where he performed alongside his daughter Miley Cyrus, and his participation in Dancing with the Stars in 2007. Oct 13    Mel McCuddin Exhibit
The Art Spirit Gallery is thrilled to showcase over forty new works by well-loved figurative oil painter Mel McCuddin of Millwood, Washington.
Opening Reception:  October 13 from 5-8pm in conjunction with ArtWalk sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene Arts and Culture Alliance.
Artist Demonstration:  October 14 from 11am – 1pm at The Art Spirit Gallery.
Show Sponsor: Fine Brewed.  We thank them for their support of the arts in our community.
Fall Gallery Hours:  Tuesday through Saturday 9 - 6
About the Artist
French poet Charles Baudelaire once observed that the “beautiful is always bizarre.” The legion of Mel McCuddin fans couldn’t have said it any better.
The growing popularity of the 85-year-old artist from tiny Millwood, Washington comes from his instantly recognizable “figurative expressionist” oil paintings that depict offbeat scenes in distinctive muted bruised hues.

In the World of McCuddin…

A tiny cowpoke rides a huge hog like a rodeo bull.  A large blue woman bathers in a birdbath.  Dogs and farm animals gaze from the canvas through human eyes.  McCuddin’s playful and comic expressions showcase the human condition in all of its relatable farce and folly.

“There is a special buzz about Mel,” said Blair Williams, the owner of The Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where McCuddin’s latest creations will be on exhibit from Oct. 13 through Nov. 4.  Prolific despite his years, over 40 new “McCuddins” (an endearing term many of his fans use) will be on display.  McCuddin found a warm home at The Art Spirit Gallery beginning in 1997, when the gallery first opened its doors and began to regularly show his paintings.  “People from around the country make a pilgrimage here to view and purchase his paintings,” Williams continued. “Mel’s unique loose style and engaging compositions draw people in. They are crazy about his work.”

In contrast, the soft-spoken former dairy deliveryman harbors not a whisper of the weirdness seen on his canvases.  Some “do think of my art as being a bit dark,” McCuddin conceded, “but I’m not that way at all.  It comes from the paint.”  A McCuddin is never premeditated.  Rather, the subject matter emerges slowly through a process of applying coats of paint in a variety of colors with brushes, cloths, and even hands.  McCuddin would use his feet if he thought it would advance the artistic outcome.  “I begin a painting with no idea in mind, and at a certain point in the process of putting paint on the canvas, and idea will suggest itself,” he once explained.  “Many of these ideas change and many are rejected until one seems strong enough to accept.  My paintings, then, are essentially a record of the evolution of an idea.”

Oct 26    Business After Hours

SpringHill Suites is passionate about art! This month's Business After Hours will be combined with their Save Art event which benefits Atlas and Fernan Elementary Schools' arts education programs. Art education is a tool for character development and academic improvement in young students. For this reason, Springhill is focusing on supporting art education in under-served public schools - a mission they are excited to share with Fresh Artists, their community service partner! In a time of drastic budget cuts hitting art education in public schools, Fresh Artists supplies innovative art programs and art supplies to teachers in severely under-resourced public schools.

The event will be starting at 5pm – we will be doing a silent auction with some great items such as:  Several dining certificates, Schweitzer ski tickets(2),Row adventures for raft trip for two, Idaho Vandals(4) football tickets and MANY more items!  We will be turning the lobby into a gallery with the kids amazing art work and we will be serving beer, wine and lemonade. The silent auction will be concluding at 7pm.

Come Support your local schools!!

Business After Hours is held on the fourth Thursday of every month. This networking event provides an opportunity for members to show off their offices or facilities. Food and beverages are provided by the sponsor business. There are drawings for door prizes. This is a great way to meet other Chamber members in a more casual “after work” atmosphere.
